Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprising

Social entrepreneurship is a very delicate word, often misinterpreted by people and society. Some call it Nonprofits making money where as some people define it as ‘for-profits’ doing things to show they aren’t evil.

Social Entrepreneurship, how ever is simply defined as a process of creating value by bringing together a unique package of resources to exploit an opportunity, in pursuit of high social returns.  The only difference between commercial and social entrepreneurship is the denomination of returns.
Social entrepreneurship is motivated and driven by a social benefit. It meets needs unmet by commercial markets and (usually the government). A successful social entrepreneurship always works with, not against the market.

Social Entrepreneurs play the role of change agents in the society. They recognize an opportunity, identify it as a real need or a personal interest, evaluate the situation and then exploit it my relentlessly pursuing the opportunity to create and sustain social value and not just the private value.

Social enterprises are not charities or welfare agencies.  They are private businesses established by entrepreneurs with an emphasis on human values rather than just profit.  These businesses focus on working with and enhancing the social capital within the community by encouraging participation, inclusion and utilizing a bottom-up approach to achieve social change. Social Enterprises can be found in the most economic sectors right from environmental, housing, Health and care, to education, food and agriculture, financial services.

The most interesting aspect of social enterprising is its increased approach from today’s youth. Youth social entrepreneurship is a way to engage youth voice in solving social problems. A large number of youth organizations and programs promote these efforts through a variety of incentives to young people.

Social Enterprising is now a global movement that is producing solutions to many of the world’s toughest problems and transforming the way we think about social change. This global movement is now acting as a bridge between the Youth, Corporates and the social problems of the society.
